How Readers Help Stories Travel

Indie authors build their worlds from the ground up. We write the stories, research the lore, check the facts, dig into history and magic systems, investigate spellings, study foreign languages and sword-fighting techniques...and we test the limits of a Google query against being put on government watch lists for our questionable wording... LOL, and make sure every detail feels real.

We design our own content, manage social media, write newsletters, create character art, and sometimes even make our own maps and book bibles just to keep our universes from spiraling into chaos.

We wear every hat not just because we care, but because we’re indie... which means if we don’t do it, it doesn’t get done. Some of us thrive in that independence, and some of us shoulder it because it’s the only way our stories get a chance.

Supporting an indie author doesn’t have to be complicated. It doesn’t have to be expensive. And it doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be genuine.

Remember, those stories don’t travel without readers. That’s where you come in.

Here are the easiest, most impactful ways to support your favorite indie authors:

Reviews — The Lifeline of Indie Books 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Reviews are one of the most powerful gifts you can give an indie author. They help new readers decide whether to take a chance on a book, and they tell the algorithm that this story deserves to be seen. Even a short, honest sentence can change an author’s entire month. Reviews help books travel farther than we ever could on our own.

Buying Direct — The Most Tangible Support

When you buy directly from an indie author through their website, at a book signing, or through a direct link, you’re helping them earn more from each sale and reinvest in future books. Direct purchases keep the lights on, the editors paid, the covers funded, and the next story moving forward.

If you adored a book, gifting it is a beautiful way to share that joy. Buying a second copy for a friend, a coworker, or a book bestie helps the story travel farther. It’s a small gesture with a big impact, and it turns you into a champion for the stories you love.

Talking About Their Books — Word of Mouth Still Wins

Whether you’re posting your last, now, next... your voice matters. Readers trust other readers, and your enthusiasm carries weight. Sharing your thoughts in a book club, recommending a title to a friend, or simply mentioning a book you loved can be the reason someone picks up a new story. Word of mouth is still one of the strongest forces in publishing... indie or traditional.

Indie authors build entire worlds and then build the marketing engine to help those worlds reach readers.

Engaging on Social Media — Small Actions, Big Impact

Likes, comments, shares, and follows may seem small, but they help indie authors stay visible in crowded digital spaces. Every interaction tells the algorithm that readers care about their stories. Sharing a reel, commenting on a post, or reposting a TikTok helps their work reach new readers, and sometimes, that’s all it takes for a book to find its audience.

Final Thoughts

Supporting an indie author doesn’t have to break the bank. A review, a direct purchase, a social share, or a kind message can mean the world to someone building their dream one chapter at a time. Your support helps their stories find new homes, and sometimes... on a down day, it truly changes their path.
