Why Community Matters More Than Algorithms

As an indie author, I know the struggle of marketing my work. I know the heart and soul I pour into story development, websites, newsletters, and social media. It’s a lot... sometimes overwhelming, and yet it’s also the part that connects me to the people who might one day fall in love with my worlds.

"But I’m not just an author. I’m a reader. A mood reader."

Some days I want action and adventure. Other days I want something heartfelt. And then there are days when I want mystery… or spice… or something that simply fits the moment. By connecting my readers with authors in different genres or tropes, I’m helping them find stories that match their moods, and in doing so, I’m supporting the indie author process.

Community and collaboration matter.

They lift me when I need encouragement. They remind me I’m not alone in this journey.

Talking about my book helps build my story. Talking about your book helps build your confidence. And sometimes, seeing another author keep going inspires me to keep going too.

Traditional publishing used to be the only path, selective, restrictive, and often out of reach. Indie publishing gives us freedom. We get to create what we want, how we want, without being boxed in. And readers today aren’t just reading books; they’re engaging with authors on a personal level.

The best readers reach out after finishing your book. They check in. They tell you what they loved. And that means more than they know.

I wish more readers understood the impact of reviews, shares, and direct purchases. Reviews don’t just tell other readers what someone enjoyed, they tell the author. It’s almost like a love letter. Maybe not the perfect phrase, but it’s a personal message that says:

“I saw your work. I felt something. Thank you.”

And direct purchases?

Let’s be honest, they help pay for the next book. The artwork. The cover. The editorial process. The hours behind the scenes that most people never see. That’s another post entirely… but it matters here too.

Supporting Indie Authors Shapes My Own Journey

When I support a fellow indie author, emotionally, socially, financially, it shapes my own path. It reminds me that someone else is out there doing exactly what I’m trying to do. It pushes me forward.

And those friends I make along the way? They support me right back. They remind me I’m not alone. And I know they need the same support on all these levels.

Being an indie author supporter isn’t just something I do. It’s part of who I am, as a writer, as a reader, and as a member of this community.
